The Enneagram and your career: making aligned choices to prevent burnout
From school onwards, young people are prepared for a working world that values performance over wellbeing and efficiency over meaning. In recent years, this model has been called into question by rising levels of exhaustion, disengagement and burnout.
In Europe, 29% of workers report experiencing stress, depression or anxiety (EU-OSHA, 2025). We need to rethink what makes a working life sustainable. Performance doesn't come from forcing yourself: it is built on self-knowledge and on who you really are.
A self-awareness tool for better choices
The Enneagram helps you understand your deeper motivations, identify your strengths, vulnerabilities and needs, and make study and career choices that energise you rather than wear you out.
It won't help you hold out longer somewhere that doesn't suit you. It helps you choose a meaningful environment, where who you are, what drives you and what you do all point in the same direction.
Three questions for a more conscious choice
- What really motivates you: being useful, understanding, succeeding, creating…
- What holds you back: fear of failure, of making mistakes, of conflict…
- Your natural talents: organisation, leadership, strategic vision…
Choosing what to study
The Enneagram helps you choose a course that suits your relationship with effort, your need for autonomy or structure, and the way you learn. The same programme can energise one person and exhaust another.
Understanding your working life
- What gives you energy and what drains it;
- The environments where you thrive;
- The situations where you over-adapt;
- The unconscious ways you put yourself under pressure.
Asking the right questions
- Does this choice respect what really motivates me?
- Am I choosing out of desire or out of fear?
- Am I choosing to fit in or to be myself?
These questions are a reminder that our choices are driven by deep, often unconscious motivations.
Loss of motivation is a warning sign
When we ignore these mechanisms, we can give too much, push ourselves too hard and stay in a setting that doesn't suit us, all the way to exhaustion. Loss of motivation is often the sign of a gap between what we do and what we deeply need. Burnout happens when that signal is ignored for too long.
The Enneagram helps you spot these signs earlier, before breaking point. It helps you:
- make better-aligned choices from the start;
- adapt your work environment to your needs;
- recognise your limits and respect them;
- step back from performance or excessive perfectionism;
- bring meaning and awareness back into your decisions.
Whether you are a student, changing careers or a manager looking out for your team, one-to-one coaching helps you take stock of what really drives you.
